Being able to create new faceplates for the ERS-1000 has been the holy grail of ideas in the community for many years, but I had never seen anyone attempt it. After having sucess creating the clear arm part, I took the risk and tried to make a faceplate.
At first I tried to make a mold with the eye lenses remove from the faceplate, but I found that this caused a lot of issues. I also tried to make the faceplate in two halves but this failed. Eventually I settled on making the faceplate in one piece with the eye lenses attached for simplicity.
This turned out to be a surprising success and I was able to create a clear faceplate, similar to the skeleton ERS-1000. But I wanted to go further - I wanted a visor faceplate. I had seen early ERS-1000 concept art at early Aibo Fan Meeting events where the aibo had a visor, so I wanted that. To do this I filled in the gaps left around where the eye lenses joined the faceplate and meticulously sanded the surface down to a clean finish. I then clear coated it many times to achieve the glossy surface finish.
This turned out to be a surprising success and I was able to create a clear faceplate, similar to the skeleton ERS-1000. But I wanted to go further - I wanted a visor faceplate. I had seen early ERS-1000 concept art at early Aibo Fan Meeting events where the aibo had a visor, so I wanted that. I then clear coated it many times to achieve the glossy surface finish.
The first attempt still retained some transparency, but it was fragile and cracked, so I ended up making a second reinforced visor with no transparency. I'd like to try making more visors that are transparent soon.
