Introduced during the ROBODEX 2002 event, Q.Taro or just known as 'Q.' is a spherical therapy robot created by Sony Creature Labs. It was developed not by the Aibo team but by one individual - Nara Yamatoji, at Sony independently. In 1990, while still a university student, the developer, Dr. Yama, submitted a sketch along with a letter. The basic concept was "stability of a vertical pendulum." The first model was born in the same year.
Dubbed 'healing creature', the robot's focus is on sensory stimulation and making the user feel calm from its presence. Like Aibo, Q.Taro has its own set of emotions which are shown as colours on the main light oval on the front. The robot is equipped with 36 sensors including microphones, speakers, heat sensors, cameras, distance sensors and touch sensors similar to the ERS-7.
The internals of Q.Taro are quite unique in that it has a system that allows the robot to stay upright while travelling in its protective clear casing. It also allows it to wirelessly charge via the supplied fold out mat. Q.Taro will follow white paths laid out for it or stay in place on its Q charging mat. There is also a charging display cradle it came with called the 'nest'.
Q.Taros could communicate with each other through song.
For many years it was thought that this robot was just left in prototype stage with the surviving units being thought as prototypes, but I found out that is not the case. Many units were produced, either being rented out or sold for a large fee. Obtaining one was done by order form. People had a choice of either renting for a year as a trial period or buying the robot outright. Based on the serial numbers, over 100 were made. Its not known where many of these are today

It is not known why this technology was never incorporated into any Aibo products, but it could be due to the cost and infancy of the technology.
These robots appear to be set up at a bar, showcasing how easy it is to set up a display area for Q.taro.
The robots could be left to roam autonomously in an area - all that is needed is a black tape boarder around the area to create a boundary for the robot to not go past.

Known functional Q.Taro prototypes - The location of most are unknown. A YouTube video of the red one popped up online in 2007 in Spain (video now lost). The gold prototype is currently owned by a collector in the UK. A teal unit seems to be owned by the original creator.

The Q's dedicated carrying case was custom-made by suitcase manufacturer Globe-Trotter. They came included with every Q-Taro that was rented or purchased.
